12-Year-Old Kept Locked in Bathroom Weighs 30lbs: Sheriff
Brandy Jaynes   (Washington County Sheriff's Office)

A Utah mom has been charged with felony child abuse after authorities say her 12-year-old son was found severely malnourished and weighing only 30 pounds—the typical weight of a 2-year-old, the Salt Lake Tribune reports. According to the St. George News, authorities say the boy's father—who appears to be separated from the boy's mother, Brandy Jaynes—discovered a locked bathroom hidden behind a sheet in Jaynes' home Sunday. He says he found his son under a blanket on the floor inside. Authorities say there was feces all over the floor, empty cans of beans in the shower, and tape to keep the light from being turned on. A video camera and baby monitor were set up to supervise the child, KUTV reports.

Sheriff's Lt. David Crouse says the room was "something out of ... a horror film" and the boy looked like he "had been held in a concentration camp." The boy's father brought him to the hospital, where—unable to even stand on his own—it is expected to take weeks to nurse him back to health. Authorities say Jaynes claimed her son wanted to live in the bathroom. It's believed the boy was kept in the bathroom for up to two years; his siblings tell authorities they stopped speaking to him through the door six months ago. The two siblings—who appear to have been treated normally—are staying with family members. (In Ohio, two parents are charged in the death of their 5-year-old daughter.)
