Suspected Bank Robber Leaves Half His Haul Around City

Authorities have captured a man who allegedly robbed a New York bank of almost $110,000—though he also allegedly left about $53,000 scattered around the city before he was caught. Police say Joseph Peeples III asked for a manager at a Chase Bank in Rochester Thursday morning and handed over a note that said "nobody dies today" if money from the vault was handed over, Spectrum News reports. He allegedly filled a bag with cash and was caught by surveillance cameras getting into a taxi—in which he left his jacket, which was holding nearly $10,000 of the money in its pockets, before exiting the cab at a bus station. At the bus station, police say he changed his clothes and left more than $43,000 in a restroom trash can.

Police say Peeples took another taxi to a motel, used his own driver's license to check in, and then after an hour, took the same cab back to the bus station and booked a ticket to New York City. But he exited the bus in Binghamton, where he was ultimately arrested on the same day of the robbery at the Grand Royale Hotel—160 miles away from the scene of the crime, the Press & Sun Bulletin reports. He allegedly confessed and told police $50,000 was stashed away in the hotel room's microwave, a shoe box, and a plastic bag atop the hotel room safe. "It's almost astounding to me in this day and age that someone would try to rob a bank in view of the technology that exists," said an official in announcing the arrest.
