The man who liked to call himself "America's Toughest Sheriff" has been given the boot by voters in Arizona's Maricopa County, where he was seeking a seventh term. The AP reports that Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was criminally charged in a racial profiling case last month, has lost to Democratic challenger Paul Penzone, a retired Phoenix police sergeant. Arpaio, 84, was known nationwide for his hardline anti-immigration stance, the Arizona Republic reports. The frequently sued Republican's opponent was able to capitalize on controversy over his legal woes, which have cost the taxpayers more than $140 million in legal fees over the years.
