Until Donald Trump's "enablers" are cleared from the GOP "women would frankly have to have been lobotomized to believe anything the Republican Party tells them," SE Cupp writes in the New York Times. Cupp says she was spurred to write a piece about the sorry state of the GOP's relationship with women after Newt Gingrich's "boorish attack" on Megyn Kelly this week. "That Mr. Gingrich...thought the best way to deflect attention from Mr. Trump's awful behavior with women was to attack another woman tells you so much about the depths to which Mr. Trump has dragged the Republican Party," she writes. Cupp says the GOP had made progress on women's outreach after the 2012 election only to have "an egomaniacal arsonist...come along and set all that ablaze."
Cupp, who writes that she "wanted very much to support the Republican nominee," says Trump has taken the GOP back to the 1950s, and the support he's getting (she is shocked to see Republicans pretending they don't know if grabbing women by the genitals is sexual assault) makes it hard to argue he doesn't represent the party. It's going to be exceedingly difficult to get women to support the GOP, which now has "to earn the right to be heard by women," she says. But it's necessary, and not just to win future elections. "We have to try to repair the relationship between the Republican Party and women...because I believe our policies are genuinely better for women," Cupp writes. Read the full piece here.
