Hundreds of protesters gathered in the San Diego County city of El Cajon on Tuesday after yet another controversial police shooting of a black man. El Cajon police chief Jeff Davis says the man, identified by relatives as 30-year-old Alfred Orlango, was shot and killed after he raised an object and pointed it at officers, reports the San Diego Union-Tribune. No weapon was recovered at the scene and Davis did not disclose exactly what the object was. According to a police press release, officers encountered the man behind a restaurant after receiving calls about somebody walking in traffic and behaving erratically.
Police say the man was shot and Tasered simultaneously by the two officers after he "drew an object from his front pants pocket, placed both hands together and extended them rapidly toward the officer taking up what appeared to be a shooting stance." The Washington Post reports that in video of the aftermath of the incident, a distraught woman says, "You guys just killed my brother in front of me." According to friends and family members, the woman had called police after her mentally ill brother had a breakdown and began acting out. Police say the officers were not wearing body cameras. They say they have bystander video of the shooting but they are not planning to release it. (More police shooting stories.)
