A new ABC News/Washington Post poll finds that Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are equally unpopular with registered voters. Clinton's unpopularity went up 6 percentage points in three weeks, and the latest poll found that 56% of adults have an unfavorable view of her—a new record for her. Meanwhile, 63% of adults have an unfavorable view of Trump. But among registered voters, Clinton's unfavorability rating was 59% and Trump's was 60%. Clinton and Trump are the most unpopular presidential candidates, based on polling, for at least three decades.
For the first time in a year, most women view Clinton unfavorably—52% of them, compared to 43% last month. And she's lost support with independents, 31% of whom now view her unfavorably, an 8-point change for the worse. As ABC notes, come November, "the high unfavorable ratings may mean that voters will be more motivated by their opposition to the candidate they dislike the most rather than their support of any candidate." The Post has this warning for anyone who thought Trump stood no chance of being elected: "Clinton's numbers serve as a reminder that Trump's unpopularity isn't prohibitive, largely because Americans—and specifically registered voters—don't much like Clinton either."
