Army Finds Remains of Soldier Captured in 2004

The remains of an Ohio soldier who was captured in Iraq four years ago have been found, reports the Cincinnati Enquirer. DNA tests identified the remains as Matt Maupin, 20, an Army general told the young soldier's parents. Maupin had been listed as missing in Iraq since his fuel convoy was ambushed west of Baghdad in 2004.

The week after Maupin was captured, a video aired on al-Jazeera TV showed him surrounded by armed masked men.  Another tape a short time later revealed the shooting of a US soldier, but only the back of the victim’s head was visible.  It was unclear how Maupin’s remains were discovered. “My heart sinks, but I know they can’t hurt him anymore,” his father said.
