Hillary Clinton—who says she has never smoked marijuana, even in a non-inhaling way—will go a step further than the Obama administration and reschedule the drug if she becomes president, her campaign says. In a statement issued after the DEA's decision to keep marijuana a Schedule I drug alongside heroin and LSD, Clinton policy adviser Maya Harris said Clinton will shift marijuana to Schedule 2, Cannabist reports. "She will also ensure Colorado, and other states that have enacted marijuana laws, can continue to serve as laboratories of democracy," Harris said. Donald Trump has also said he supports allowing states to set their own marijuana policies.
Harris praised the administration's decision to loosen rules on research involving marijuana. "As Hillary Clinton has said throughout this campaign, we should make it easier to study marijuana so that we can better understand its potential benefits, as well as its side effects, she said." The DEA decision—which states marijuana has no accepted medical use — came as a shock and a huge disappointment to legalization supporters who hoped for better from President Obama, McClatchy reports. He has said the decision should be left up to Congress, but some still hope he will reschedule marijuana by executive order before he leaves office.
