Tesla CEO Elon Musk has released his "master plan" for the electric-vehicle company, one that comes 10 years after his first such plan. The nitty gritty:

  • Bigger vehicles: New vehicles in the works "range from a commercial truck called the Tesla Semi to a public transport bus, a 'new kind of pickup truck' and a compact SUV. The vehicles will be unveiled next year alongside Tesla's existing fleet of electric cars." From Reuters.

  • Sharable vehicles: Musk wants to "move Tesla into the popular ride-sharing business, not only with an Uber-like fleet but also with an app that lets Tesla owners rent out their vehicles when they’re not using them, perhaps defraying a portion of their auto loans." From the Los Angeles Times.
  • Bold solar plans: Musk envisions rooftop solar panels that make car owners "their own utility," and Quartz has details on how he expects to make that happen, including the recent acquisition of SolarCity.
  • Autopilot: Musk also defends the company's continued push for an autopilot feature—in the wake of a fatal crash—and the Guardian has details on that.
  • The actual plan: Read Musk's blog post here.
  • A slideshow: TechCrunch compiles the highlights here.
  • A criticism: “As is typical, Elon Musk has laid out a grandiose plan for the future with no timeframes and few specifics, and no mention of how and when Tesla will be profitable," complains Autotrader analyst Michelle Krebs, per the BBC.
