Florida Gov. Rick Scott kicked off the third night of the Republican National Convention with a speech that invoked the Orlando massacre, one in which he called Donald Trump the better candidate to fight terrorism at home. Scott also labeled Hillary Clinton a failure, which gave the crowd an opportunity to begin chanting the favorite new slogan of the convention in regard to her: "Lock her up!" As the Atlantic explains, the phrase began punctuating speeches on Monday, a night that featured the mother of a Benghazi victim calling for Clinton's imprisonment.
It gained significant steam the following night as Chris Christie unleashed a prosecutor-style attack on Clinton, and at this point, the slogan rivals "Make America Great Again" as a convention theme, observes the Washington Post. CNN, too, labels it the "unofficial slogan" of this year's convention, though it notes some GOP critics: Clinton "now belongs in prison? C'mon. We can make the case that she shouldn't be elected without jumping the shark," tweeted Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake. (Some Clinton critics are going even further.)
