New evidence from the wreckage of EgyptAir Flight 804 shows someone tried to put out a fire moments before the plane crashed into the Mediterranean in May, Reuters reports. The new information comes from the flight deck voice recorder, which confirms earlier findings from the flight's data recorder, according to Sky News. The data recorder showed smoke in the plane's restroom and near the cockpit shortly before the crash. Investigators say they've also found high-temperature damage and soot on some of the wreckage. All 66 people aboard the plane, which was traveling between Paris and Cairo, were killed in the crash.
Investigators still have not determined the cause of the crash, and further analysis of the voice recorder is planned. However, officials believe the fire was caused by mechanical failure and wasn't set intentionally. There was no distress call from the plane before the crash, and no organization or individual has claimed responsibility. The remains of some of the passengers and crew of Flight 804 were recovered Sunday from in and around the wrecked plane—nearly two miles below the surface of the Mediterranean, USA Today reports.
