The crew of Animal Planet show River Monsters was searching for a "giant grouper" fish on a remote island in Australia last November. Instead, they found a castaway of sorts. "We saw this blue and white plastic cooler box sitting on some rocks, which we thought was a bit strange," host Jeremy Wade tells ABC News. "Somebody made the joke maybe we were going to see Tom Hanks suddenly appear." Pretty much. Show director Stephen Shearman tells Inside Edition that a "guy with no clothes" suddenly came "running out of (a) cave, waving his arms out." The crew soon learned the man named Tremine, a roofer and hobby fisherman from Borroloola in northern Australia, had arrived on Barranyi North Island to dig for oysters 60 hours previously but lost his boat and was left without water or supplies in 110-degree heat.
"He had said his last prayer. He was prepared to die and meet his maker," Shearman says. "It's very likely (Tremine) wouldn't have seen anyone else if we hadn't just chanced along," adds Wade; the crew had only happened upon that part of the island after finding waters too choppy elsewhere. Incredibly, Tremine recognized a familiar face among the crew: A friend was serving as guide. The guide "was used to him going away and not getting in touch. It was quite a shock when we discovered this semi-naked guy coming out of the cave, and it was his friend. He was completely dumbfounded," Shearman says. Once Tremine was rehydrated, he was well enough to return home. "But he's promised God he's going to start smoking again," Shearman says. "If he had a lighter, he'd be able to cook, and he'd have a fire." (This guy survived more than a year lost at sea.)
