Florida Legalizes Shacking Up

Unmarried couples in Florida longing to move in together—or to "lewdly and lasciviously associate"—can now do so completely legally. Gov. Rick Scott signed a bill on Wednesday to repeal an 1868 law that made it illegal for an unmarried man and woman to live together, the AP reports. The law was almost never enforced, but if it had been, co-habitating couples would have been fined $500 and jailed for 60 days.

On its way to the governor's desk, the measure passed unanimously in the state Senate, but five dissenting Republicans in the state House apparently thought it was too soon, the Orlando Sentinel reports. Similar laws are still on the books in Michigan and Mississippi. (More Florida stories.)
