Ted Cruz and Donald Trump have gone from fighting about their wives to fighting about alleged mistresses. After a National Enquirer story published Friday accused Cruz of having affairs with five different women, the senator blamed the story on the "sleazy" Trump and accused him of playing "dirty tricks," the New York Times reports. The story "is garbage," Cruz told reporters in Wisconsin. "It is complete and utter lies. It is a tabloid smear, and it is a smear that has come from Donald Trump and his henchmen." He added that "sleaze has no place in politics, and I hope the American people are fed up with it."
Trump denied having anything to do with the Enquirer story. Cruz's "problem with the National Enquirer is his and his alone, and while they were right about OJ Simpson, John Edwards, and many others, I certainly hope they are not right about Lyin’ Ted Cruz," Trump wrote in a Facebook post. Katrina Pierson, one of the women rumored to have had an affair with Cruz, is now Trump's national spokeswoman. She tells the Washington Post that, speaking for herself, "the article is trash and 100% false." The Enquirer story quoted former Trump adviser Roger Stone, a former Nixon aide described by Cruz as a man with "50 years of dirty tricks behind him." Stone tells USA Today that he had nothing to do with the article's placement, and he heard the Cruz allegations from "credible reporters." (More Ted Cruz stories.)
