CEO's 'Saddest' Tweets Mark Twitter's 10th Birthday
OK, then.   (Twitter)

Twitter is now a brash, confident, occasionally obnoxious tween. The social media site celebrates its 10th birthday Monday, remembering on its blog how it all started on March 21, 2006, with a single tweet by head Twitterer Jack Dorsey that read: "just setting up my twttr." "Thank you for making history, driving change, lifting each other up and laughing together every day," the blog post reads. More on how the rest of the world is celebrating this milestone:

  • Mashable points out six ways Twitter has altered the world, including "[changing] celebrity culture beyond recognition."

  • A visual history of Twitter through (of course) tweets is presented on Wired, from the birth of the @ and # symbols all the way up through Election 2016 Twitter.
  • Re/code compiles the first tweets from "some of the most influential tweeters around" (Donald Trump's in 2009: "Be sure to tune in and watch Donald Trump on Late Night with David Letterman as he presents the Top Ten List tonight!"), while Time pulls together the most popular tweets ever based on number of retweets (the No. 1 tweet, Ellen's Oscars selfie, boasts more than 3.3 million RTs).
  • Dorsey didn't stop tweeting after his first groundbreaker, and so Gizmodo takes on the task of finding his "saddest and weirdest" missives. (One from 2007: "Ironing my pink shirt.")
  • FiveThirtyEight follows up on @VENETHIS, said to be Twitter's most prolific user with 37.8 million tweets. The site tries to solve the mystery of who @VENETHIS—who doesn't seem to tweet about anything substantial—really is.
  • Adweek notes the 2:30-minute video Twitter embedded in its tweet announcing its special day, a clip that appears similar to "typical year-end videos made annually by the likes of Google, YouTube, Facebook and, yes, Twitter." But Fast Company has a theory about the meaning of the final tweet in the video, which is cut down to appropriate 140-character size.
