Trapped in an elevator for 24 hours with Shia LaBeouf. Sound like the stuff of nightmares? Not for the Oxford students currently lining up to ride the lift with the actor-turned-performance-artist. The Verge reports LaBeouf is spending a full day inside a university elevator, inviting people to ride with him, and livestreaming the whole thing for a project called #ELEVATE. It's part of a presentation for the Oxford Union debating society, and you can listen in on the whole thing here. "How do we do this and not feel douchey about it," LaBeouf said in explaining to one passenger about why he opted to speak in an elevator rather than a lecture hall. "How do we make this egalitarian like the Internet? Let's just move the talk to the elevator."
Other topics being discussed so far: the career of Bill Murray, working with the singer Sia, and why anyone is waiting in line to ride an elevator with Shia LaBeouf. The Independent reports that last question was brought up by a student who couldn't figure out why he just did that very thing. "The pull is strong, I get it," LaBeouf responded. "If Anthony Hopkins was stashed up in some elevator, I'd be in the line with no shame. But if it’s me, then I get the shame part." LaBeouf's last piece of performance art, wherein he livestreamed himself watching all of his films, received positive reviews. And the Verge calls #ELEVATE "fascinating" so far.
