An incredible story out of Jefferson Parish, La., where a woman attempted suicide by jumping headfirst over the railing of the Huey P. Long Bridge Sunday—and survived. Perhaps the most incredible part of the story is how she survived: She never hit the water and instead got stuck, headfirst, in a hole on one of the bridge's supporting steel beams, WDSU reports. Deputies were called to the scene by another driver who had seen the woman stop her car in the right travel lane and then jump, WGNO reports. When one of the deputies looked over the railing, he saw the woman.
He climbed over the railing himself to "comfort" the unidentified 53-year-old, who was attempting to get herself unstuck, WDSU says. The other deputy got a tow strap, which allowed both deputies to tether themselves, go over the railing, and free the woman, NOLA.com reports. The fire department ended up helping, too, and ultimately the woman suffered only minor injuries. She was to undergo psychiatric evaluation at a hospital.
