US stocks are sliding into the close as the market gives back all of its big gain from the day before. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 253 points, or 1.4%, to 17,495 Thursday. The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 31 points, or 1.5%, to 2,041. The Nasdaq composite declined 68 points, or 1.4%, to 5,002.
Steep drops in energy prices and metals Thursday pulled down the stocks of oil and gas producers and mining companies. Chevron lost 3% and Newmont Mining skidded 8%. The dollar rose against other currencies a day after the Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time since the financial crisis. Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.23%. (More Dow Jones stories.)
