Donald Trump says "one of the first things I'd do in terms of executive order" as president is command the death penalty for anyone convicted of killing a police officer. "I want to let you know, the police and law enforcement in this country, I will never ever let them down," Trump said, per the Hill, while speaking at a police labor union meeting in New Hampshire on Thursday, during which the New England Police Benevolent Association endorsed him. The Republican front-runner also criticized recent efforts to remove military equipment from forces following fatal shootings by officers. "Trump and the police are no strangers to taking the heat," a board member said, per the Telegraph. "So that is something that Mr. Trump and the police can mutually respect each other for."

Though it was mainly conducted before Trump called for a ban on Muslims on Monday, a New York Times/CBS News poll shows possible backlash from Trump’s recent comments hasn't swayed voters. About 35% of Republican primary voters say they support Trump, and 51% of those voters say their minds are made up, per the Times. (Hillary Clinton has the support of 52% of Democratic primary voters.) The survey of 1,275 adults from Dec. 4 to Dec. 8 also shows 70% of likely Republican primary voters say Trump is well-equipped to handle terrorism at a time when 44% of Americans believe an attack is very likely in the next few months. On the other hand, 64% of voters say they would be worried about what Trump might do as president. He's "talking about is the same type of hate that was faced in the Second World War," said a protester on Thursday. (More Donald Trump stories.)
