Authorities in San Bernardino, California, are responding to an active shooting situation Wednesday, the AP reports. Details are developing, but the San Bernardino police chief said during a press conference streamed on KTLA that up to 3 people entered the Inland Regional Center and opened fire on people inside, and that preliminary numbers indicate there are at least "14 people that are dead and upwards of 14 people that are injured." The suspects fled, possibly in a dark SUV, he said. The site is a center for people with developmental disabilities, and the social services center is not yet secure; people are being asked to avoid the area around Orange Snow Road and Waterman Avenue. There are as-yet-unconfirmed reports that the suspects may have opened fire on county employees attending a holiday party. A motive is not yet clear.
A police spokesperson tells the Los Angeles Times the suspects were heavily armed and possibly wearing body armor; a law enforcement official tells CNN they were carrying AK-47s or similar weapons. Police also used a robot to detonate some sort of "device" that was inside the building and was found to be "not normal" by a bomb squad, and the police chief said during the press conference that other suspicious devices are being investigated. The father of an employee at a building where shootings occurred tells a CNN affiliate that his daughter texted him: "Shooting at my work. People shot." Schools, county and city buildings, and ports are locked down. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, the San Bernardino Police Department, and the San Bernardino City Fire Department are providing updates on Twitter. (More shooting stories.)
