Jubal Early Kirby, 49, is terminally ill with a lung disease called pulmonary fibrosis and has spent three weeks in a hospital in Charlotte, NC. So Kaila Kirby, the younger of his two daughters, decided to move her July 2016 wedding up a bit—to Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, reports the Charlotte Observer—because she always wanted her dad to be the one to give her away.
The ceremony consisted of about 50 family members, hospital workers, and members of the media, the Observer notes. Balloons and cake were provided by the nursing staff, and a shirt for Kirby and veil and bouquet for the bride were paid for by a Target employee who heard about the last-minute wedding, reports Fox Carolina. "I am happy, but sad, because I wanted my dad to stand beside me," Kaila says. "He's my best friend." It turns out that the family has been busy with weddings this week: Kirby himself got married Monday to the woman he's been with for 26 years, the station reports. (This couple recently downsized their wedding to sponsor a Syrian refugee family of four.)
