Authorities in suburban Phoenix say a handcuffed and shackled inmate was seriously injured after he kicked out a window in a police transport van on a freeway and jumped out of the moving vehicle. Gilbert police Sgt. Jesse Sanger says Adam Arlington broke out of the city police van bringing him to the Maricopa County jail in downtown Phoenix on Wednesday morning. Police say the 31-year-old leaped from the van's passenger's side window and ran across Interstate 10 before being recaptured.

Sanger says Arlington suffered a head injury and was taken to a Phoenix hospital. He's listed in serious condition. Arlington was in custody on a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct and was going to be booked into jail after he was unable to post bond. (More Arizona stories.)
