The two leading GOP presidential candidates don't think much of the students continuing to protest the University of Missouri's handling of racial incidents. NBC News reports Donald Trump called the protesters "disgusting" and "disgraceful" during an interview Thursday. He accused them of being unreasonable, saying, "Their demands are, like, crazy!" Those demands include a "racial awareness and inclusion curriculum" and more black faculty to make Mizzou a less hostile-feeling place for minority students. In an interview Wednesday, Ben Carson accused the protesters of "infantile behavior" and Mizzou of being "too tolerant," according to Politico. Carson said the university administration must "have the moral courage to stand up to it."
Large protests—including football players refusing to play and a student going on a hunger strike—have made headlines at the university this month. Protesters claim the school hasn't done enough to address racial tensions in recent years, NBC reports. In response, Mizzou's president and campus chancellor resigned this week. Trump says that was a mistake, calling the administrators "weak" and "ineffective" and saying it wouldn't have happened if he were in charge. "I think that when they resigned, they set something in motion that's gonna be a disaster for the next long period of time." According to Politico, Carson said the protests are a symptom of a larger nationwide problem: unreasonableness.
