Police in Houston have arrested a man described as a "person of interest" in Friday night's attempted assassination of Judge Julie Kocurek, according to the Austin Police Department. The arrest was on "unrelated charges," according to a brief statement from the department. Sources tell the Austin American-Statesman that the suspect had a case in Kocurek's court, which handles felonies in Austin and the surrounding county. The sources say Kocurek's son drove her home after a football game Friday night, and when he got out to remove an obstacle placed in front of the gate to her driveway, somebody opened fire on Kocurek, missing her but leaving her with injuries from shrapnel and broken glass.

Kocurek has dealt with many high-profile cases in her 25 years as a prosecutor and then a judge, and defense lawyer David Minton tells CNN that she's widely considered to be fair and reasonable. "But clearly in her job and the number of years she's been on the bench, she would have had to make some enemies for doing her job," he says. "It's just something that comes with the territory. But you never think it would come to this." CBS News reports that Kocurek, who is hospitalized in stable condition, has dealt with cases involving former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, neither of whom is a suspect. (More Texas stories.)
