A heartbreaking photograph of an obviously depressed dog in an animal rescue kennel, dubbed "The Saddest Dog in the World," got nearly 10,000 shares after it was posted on Facebook Oct. 24. But now, some much happier news for Lana, the 1-year-old Labrador retriever mix shown in the photo: Rescue Dogs Match, the Canadian nonprofit that took Lana in, has gotten 2,240 applications to adopt her, ABC News reports. As Mighty Mutts, a dog training company that works with the rescue, explained in the Facebook post, Lana was originally rescued along with a litter of 13 other puppies last year. She was put up for adoption at 10 weeks old, and was adopted by a family when she was 5 months old, but she was recently returned after behavioral issues came up.
"Often, when there are so many pups in a litter, they learn to compete for their food. (It's) the only way to survive when food is scarce," the Facebook post explained. "Lana came to us with some guarding issues that were worked on," but she was still having them a year later with unfamiliar people. After being returned, she would only come out of her kennel for two people, so the rescue was looking for a foster home for her. She has now been placed in temporary foster care and is much happier, Mighty Mutts said in a followup post Monday. "Lana has finally come out of her shell and settled in with her new foster mom," the group writes. "It always amazes us to see how well such heartbroken animals can bounce back!" She will be adopted out after going through training for her guarding issues. (More uplifting news stories.)
