Only 4 Officers Still Hunting for Madeleine McCann

The UK's Metropolitan Police has reduced the number of officers looking for a 3-year-old girl who disappeared from her family's vacation home in Portugal eight years ago from 29 to four, NBC News reports. Officials announced the change Wednesday, saying most avenues of investigation had been completed while stressing the investigation would continue. According to the BBC, police have reviewed more than 8,600 reported sightings, taken more than 1,300 statements, and investigated 60 persons of interest and still have no conclusion about what happened to Madeleine McCann.

The Metropolitan Police says it's now looking at a "small number of focused lines of inquiry," and Madeleine's parents say they are still hopeful she'll be found, the BBC reports. Police call the case "exceptional" and point out the investigation has been funded above normal levels. According to NBC, police have spent millions looking for the girl.
