Chris Christie is still running for president, but the New Jersey governor's treatment of a nurse a year ago is making more headlines this week than his campaign. Nurse Kaci Hickox, who was put in mandatory quarantine in a Newark, NJ, hospital after returning from treating Ebola patients in Sierra Leone, has filed a $250,000 lawsuit against the New Jersey governor and state health officials for violating her civil rights, NJ.com reports. "I never had Ebola. I never had symptoms of Ebola. I tested negative for Ebola the first night I stayed in New Jersey Governor Chris Christie's private prison," she said in a statement released by the ACLU. The lawsuit reveals for the first time that the CDC cleared Hickox before she left the airport, NJ.com notes.
"My liberty, my interests, and consequently my civil rights were ignored because some ambitious governors saw an opportunity to use an age-old political tactic: fear," Hickox said. The other governor she's referring to is New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who, like Christie, backed down from a hard-line quarantine policy within days, New York notes. Hickox's lawyers say Christie is being sued as an individual, which they hope will dissuade other officials from violating the civil rights of health workers, especially when there's no valid scientific reason to do so, NJ.com reports.
