Third-place opening as Neverland flick finds only $15.5M

There is no Neverland magic at the box office for Pan. The expensive fantasy earned $15.5 million in its opening weekend, according to Rentrak estimates Sunday. The Joe Wright-directed film cost an estimated $150 million to produce. Ridley Scott's space adventure The Martian kept the top spot for the second week in a row with a solid $37 million, bringing its domestic total to $108.7 million.

Hotel Transylvania 2 took second place in its third weekend in theaters with $20.3 million, bumping its total to $116.8 million. Pan came in at No. 3. Nancy Meyers' workplace comedy The Intern earned $8.7 million, and the border thriller Sicario brought in $7.4 million, rounding out the top five. Meanwhile, the high-wire spectacle The Walk faltered in wide release, with $3.7 million. (More box office stories.)
