Kim Davis is back behind the desk at her Rowan County clerk's job after five days in jail, and she had something to say this morning for those awaiting her next move. A choked-up Davis, reading from a handwritten statement, announced she won't interfere with her deputies issuing marriage licenses, but she's not authorizing them and wonders if they're even valid, the AP reports. She noted that she was torn between following the law, per a judge's orders, and her religious convictions. "I'm here before you this morning with a seemingly impossible choice that I do not wish upon any of my fellow Americans: my conscience or my freedom," she said, her voice shaking. A deputy clerk, Brian Mason, says he'll issue licenses despite Davis' objections.

From Davis' statement, per CBS News: "I want the whole world to know ... If any [deputy clerk] feels they must issue an unauthorized license to avoid being thrown in jail, I understand their tough choice, and I will take no action against them. However, any unauthorized license that they issue will not have my name, my title, or my authority on it. Instead, the license will state that they are issued pursuant to a federal court order." She added outside the courthouse, "I don't want to have this conflict. I don't want to be in the spotlight. And I certainly don't want to be a whipping post. I am no hero. I'm just a person that's been transformed by the grace of God. ... I just want to serve my neighbors quietly without violating my conscience."
