A police officer was shot and killed during a traffic stop in the Chicago suburb of Fox Lake this morning, and a manhunt is currently underway for the shooter, CBS Chicago reports. Details of the shooting are scant, but sources say the officer was shot after deploying pepper spray. The Chicago Tribune reports that other officers responding found the officer in a marshy area, and he died at the scene. He did not have his gun, and it's reportedly possible the suspect or suspects took it as well as the pepper spray. Police say they are searching for two white males and a black male.
Local schools are on lockdown, and residents have been told to remain inside. "If (residents) see anybody in their area … that doesn’t belong or doesn’t look right, they should call 911," the Lake County undersheriff says. The Tribune calls the manhunt "massive." (More Chicago stories.)
