A crowd rallying for black power faced off against Klu Klux Klan members today outside the South Carolina Statehouse over the Confederate flag, NBC News reports. About 50 KKK members showed up waving the flags (with one bearing a Nazi symbol) after a 200-strong "Countering the Attack on Black Unity Rally." The latter included people from Black Lawyers for Justice and Black Educators for Justice, a group from Florida that's linked to the New Black Panther Party. The KKK members hurled racial slurs at the earlier group, who yelled back from barricades where they were placed near the Statehouse. Scuffles eventually broke out and police took two people away, WYFF4 reports.
Gov. Nikki Haley asked people yesterday to keep away from the Capitol during the KKK rally, calling "hateful" and saying that "want to make the Statehouse a lonely place for them." Several churches responded by canceling a prayer rally, but some did come by to see the event: "I think if you don't see it and experience some things, you don't get the same message," says a women who brought her children. In a twist, the State asked people not to attend because off the KKK as well as the New Black Panther Party, which the SCLC considers anti-Semitic. "Don't show up to gawk, and certainly don't show up to demonstrate how much you oppose the ugly, angry racism on display," says the editorial. "Just stay away." (More KKK stories.)
