Autumn Veatch, the 16-year-old girl who walked out of the woods in Washington state two days after a plane crash that is believed to have killed her step-grandparents, is out of the hospital and has an amazing story of survival, authorities say. The sheriff in Okanogan County says that after the crash in mountainous, heavily wooded territory, the teenager managed to find her way to a road through terrain that is dangerous even for experienced climbers. "She came all the way down," the sheriff says. "That's how people get lost, when you try to go over the ridge. She was smart. If she went the wrong way, she’d be out there still." He tells KING 5 that he is extremely impressed with Autumn, who is "kinda like a super hero."
Rogers tells the AP that after the Beechcraft A-35 flew into clouds, they suddenly parted to reveal a mountain ahead. "They crashed right into the trees and hit the ground," he says. "She tried to do what she could to help her grandparents, but she couldn't because of the fire." Autumn spent the night on a sandbar while following a stream out of the woods. In a 911 call made after motorists who found her on Route 20 brought her to a general store, Autumn says she was the only one who made it out and "I have a lot of burns on my hands and I'm kind of covered in bruises and scratches and stuff," per KING 5. Wreckage has been spotted from the air but search teams have been unable to reach the site, reports the AP. (Two sisters lost in Michigan lived on Girl Scout cookies for 13 days.)
