24/7 Wall Street has dug into stats from the CDC on which states fare the best and worst in terms of cancer mortality. Generally speaking, states with the worst scores also have high rates of lung cancer and poverty, suggesting that a one-two punch of lifelong smoking and inadequate health care takes a toll. Here are the five states with the highest rates of fatal cancer:

  1. Kentucky: Cancer mortality rate of 211.7 per 100,000
  2. Louisiana: 205.5 per 100,000
  3. Mississippi: 205.5 per 100,000
  4. West Virginia: 203.6 per 100,000
  5. Tennessee: 201.9 per 100,000

And the states with the five lowest rates:

  1. Utah: 133.8 per 100,000
  2. Hawaii: 145.6 per 100,000
  3. Colorado: 154.8 per 100,000
  4. New Mexico: 157.4 per 100,000
  5. Arizona: 158 per 100,000
