A cheating spouse is one obvious reason for divorce, but Prevention rounds up several other weird factors, for reasons that aren't always clear. A sampling:

  • Long commute: When one or more spouse travels 45 minutes or more each way, the rate of divorce ticks up.
  • Peer pressure: People are far more likely to divorce if a family member or a close friend has done so.
  • A daughter: For some reason, a couple whose first child is a girl is more likely to divorce.

  • Equal chores: Maybe the most counter-intuitive of the bunch. Couples who split the housework equally had a higher divorce rate in a Norwegian study.
  • Unequal drinking: Specifically, if the wife drinks more than her husband, it raises the odds of splitsville.
