Nine Inch Nails followed in the Radiohead revolution's footsteps yesterday, self-releasing a 36-track instrumental record online without warning and announcing an elaborate set of pricing options. You can pay nothing and listen to the first nine songs, “100% DRM-free,” and enjoy a pile of extras, Pitchfork Media reports. The $300 package comes complete with four vinyl LPs and a Trent Reznor signature.
The whole thing is protected with a creative commons license, a free copyright. It is not Reznor's first foray into the online arena: last year a Reznor-Saul Williams collaboration was released online free, with a higher-quality version costing $5. Ghosts is scheduled to have a regular commercial release on April 8, reports the LA Times. (More Nine Inch Nails stories.)
