Kayla Davis, 26, has had kidney disease from age 10, and went on dialysis in September 2011. She needed a kidney, and family members weren't good matches; a Facebook page set up to look for a donor yielded no one. Then, "almost like a last resort," the South Carolina woman says, she posted about her ordeal on Reddit. Within five hours, the perfect person had seen the post: Jennifer Moss of Georgia, 33, who likes to go on Reddit looking for people she can help. (Time has one example of many: she sent a gift card to a pregnant mom who couldn't afford veggies; check out her Reddit activity here.) Moss told Davis she'd get tested; she found out she was a match; and nine months after Davis' post, the successful transplant was performed March 26.

Moss' thinking, as she recalls: "I have something that the other person needs, and if it’s not going to hurt me, why not?" Her path to surgery is captured on Reddit, with posts like this one revealing Moss to be a pretty great person: "Donator here! Thanks for all your kind words---! We are both ready for this to be done already...lol. We started this back in June of last year and 9 months and a gazillion tests later, we are so close! Surgery is being done laparoscopically so I won't have it too bad, /U/Ranaeil [that's Kayla] has a tougher recovery than me :) Woo, can't wait for some cool incision scars!" Now, a once constantly exhausted Davis says she's full of energy and plans to go to college for computer science—and in September, she'll attend Moss' wedding. (More uplifting news stories.)
