After an 18-hour manhunt, a suspect in the shooting of an employee at a North Carolina college is now in custody. Authorities say Kenneth Morgan Stancil III, 20, carried a long gun into Wayne Community College in Goldsboro yesterday before 8am and fired a single shot, killing print shop director Ron Lane on the third floor, WRAL reports. Stancil was found early today more than 500 miles away in Florida. Daytona Beach patrol officers arrested Stancil, who was carrying a knife, for violating the city's rule against sleeping on the beach at about 1:20am without incident. WFTV reports Stancil gave officers his name.
The Goldsboro Police Department is now working to have Stancil, who is being held without bond, extradited back to North Carolina. School officials there say Stancil had previously been a work-study student under Lane and that they aren't aware of any other connection between the two. However, a relative of Lane's tells WNCN that the teacher fired Stancil. Stancil's mother says her son was upset because Lane "made inappropriate sexual advances toward him." Police have not yet described a motive. Classes will resume today with extra security personnel on hand. (More school shooting stories.)
