Bryan Murray returned to coach for the Senators for the first time since the 2007 finals, but the early results weren't encouraging, as the Flyers won 3-1. Jason Spezza scored the lone goal for Ottawa, then was promptly ejected for fighting with Philly goalie Martin Biron. Mike Knuble and Scottie Upshall scored the decisive goals in the third. Also in hockey:

  • Marquee midseason pickup Marian Hossa injured his knee and sat out the third period in his Pittsburgh debut as the Penguins flopped in Boston, 5-1.
  • The Rangers rode an early 3-0 lead to a 4-2 victory against the Hurricanes, winning their third straight and sixth of eight.
