Toronto police have a strange mystery on their hands: Someone dug an impressive tunnel near York University, but they have no idea who or why, reports the BBC. In fact, a police tweet sums things up: "If you built a tunnel near Rexall Centre in Toronto give us a call, k?” It was no amateur effort: At 33 feet long and nearly 7 feet high, the tunnel had reinforced walls, a gas generator, extension cords, moisture-resistant light bulbs, and a sump pump to remove water. The builders (police think it likely involved more than one person) used a pulley system to remove dirt as they dug the tunnel, which has since been filled in. One other find: A rosary tacked to the wall, with a poppy attached.

“I don’t have any evidence that suggests criminality at this point,” said deputy police chief Mark Saunders. “But bear in mind I don’t have the intent behind this at this point, that could change. I’m open to anything right now.” The Toronto Star notes that the tunnel was about 30 yards from the fence of the campus' Rexall Centre, which will be hosting tennis events for the Pan Am Games this summer. But police say the tunnel didn't appear to be leading to the facility, or to anywhere else for that matter. The National Post, meanwhile, observes that "York University has an engineering school, but not one with the pranking history of other Canadian institutions." All of which has left cops perplexed: As Saunders says, "there's no criminal offense for digging a hole." (More Toronto stories.)
