When police in Cornwall, Ontario, responded to a domestic call, they found an elderly woman with dementia arguing with her husband of 54 years. In talking to the husband, the officers learned that he had recently pawned his wedding ring, a sign of how desperate things were getting as he tried to care for his wife and still afford food, reports the Cornwall Seaway News. At that point, local officers took up a collection among themselves, raising $150 for groceries and another $130 to get the wedding ring back.
"This really shows that our officers have a heart," says city councillor Andre Rivette, who tells Huffington Post Canada that you could have heard a "pin drop" when he relayed the story to the city council. The couple have no relatives in the area and are "basically alone," he says. But that might change: A local Alzheimer's group and a community care center will try to help.
