Animal Life-Savers: 5 Most Uplifting Stories of the Week

A couple of people who went above and beyond to save our animal friends and Peyton Manning making the classiest of calls make this week's list:

• 90-Year-Old Twins Die 2 Hours Apart: They entered the world together and left it pretty much the same way: Twin sisters Mary Dickson and Martha Dixon died Christmas morning about two hours apart in Granite City, Ill., at the age of 90. Mary's daughter thought a song on the radio as her mom died was especially fitting.

• Snowmobilers Save Moose in Avalanche: Three snowmobilers in Alaska came across a fresh landslide and approached to make sure no skiers had been trapped. Sure enough, they spotted something sticking out of the snow—something that turned out to be the snout of a buried moose. And the beast seemed to appreciate his rescuers' efforts.
• Surgery Saves Goldfish: A UK man noticed that his beloved goldfish wasn't doing so well and wound up shelling out nearly $500 for life-saving surgery. As the vet explains, the surgery itself was pretty easy, but administering the anesthetic to the 3-inch fish took some creativity.
• Peyton Manning Tracks Down Faithful Fan: Peyton Manning surely gets tons of requests to meet with fans, but this one required going a little above and beyond. It involved a hard-to-find fan in Alaska, some assistance from state troopers, and a wife's surprise Christmas gift.
• Strangers Help Dad Get Dead Infant's Ashes Back: A man who thought he'd lost the boxed ashes of his deceased infant daughter has them back thanks to the efforts of several strangers in central Ohio. First on the thank-you list is an observant employee at an auto scrap yard.
