Two teen girls from Bountiful, Utah, who claimed to have been kidnapped at knifepoint, kept holed up all day in an SUV, and held overnight in September are now being accused of making the whole story up. The cops investigating the case say the girls appear to have used public transportation to hop through a few towns between Bountiful and Santaquin, which is 75 miles away, and that due to bus routes, they apparently got stuck in Santaquin. Cops found surveillance video from a convenience store in Payson, one of the alleged stops, showing the girls during the time they said they'd been abducted, and the girls were said to have confessed after being told about the tape, reports KSL.com. "My theory is they got stuck there," one investigator says. "Whether they were running away or just taking the day off, I don't know."
The day after they were supposedly kidnapped, the girls, ages 16 and 17, stopped a passing car on Main Street in Santaquin and made a frantic-sounding 911 call from the driver's phone, saying they'd been held prisoners through the night, the Salt Lake Tribune reports. One girl had duct tape on her body, and investigators are accusing her of putting it on herself. A Bountiful police sergeant says he proposed misdemeanor charges for wrongly using the 911 emergency system and making a false police report; a Utah State Courts spokeswoman says misdemeanor charges in juvenile courts can't be disclosed, notes the Tribune.
