Mexico's attorney general had had about enough of questions over the murder of 43 students gruesomely burned in a 14-hour fire, and said as much on live television Friday. "Ya me canse," said Jesus Murillo Karam, a phrase translated variously as "Enough, I'm tired" and "I've had enough," in attempting to signal the end of an hour-long press conference. Mexicans, it turns out, have had about enough of nearly a decade of mind-numbing violence that has claimed the lives of about 100,000 of their countrymen—and they let Murillo Karam know it, reports the AP. Within hours, Murillo Karam was the not-so-proud inspiration behind #YaMeCanse and #estoycansado ("I'm tired"), reports Reuters.
The Twitterverse had no shortage of remedies for Murillo Karam's exhaustion, most along the lines of "If you're tired, why don't you resign?", as well as an avalanche of tweeters' own versions: "Enough, I'm tired of living in a narco state" and "Enough, I'm tired of corrupt politicians" among them. And Mexicans' outrage over the massacre is proving explosive: Reuters notes that protesters also spray-painted "I've had enough ... of fear" outside Murillo Karam's office overnight even as thousands marched in protest nearby—many carrying #YaMeCanse signs—and violence broke out, with protesters breaking the National Palace's entrance doors and cars burning in Chilpancingo, the capital of Guerrero state, home to the murdered students. (The AP has video of protests here.) Others protesters are marching 112 miles from Iguala to Mexico City. (More Mexico stories.)
