Students in an Arizona school district will soon be working with a biology textbook that has a page missing or at least blotted out. The board of Gilbert Public Schools has voted to redact the page because it discusses drug-induced abortions in a section on contraception, reports KTVK. As the Arizona Republic explains, the district views that as a violation of a new state law mandating that public schools "present childbirth and adoption as preferred options to elective abortion."

The book, Campbell Biology, is considered a mainstream text, but the conservative advocacy group Alliance Defending Freedom urged the board to make the change. The 2012 law "applies any time a mention of abortion is included in instruction," says one of the group's attorneys. "This is not an ambiguous law." The board agreed, though an official with the state's own Education Department said the textbook seemed to be OK. "The mere mention of a means of medically inducing abortion does not automatically signal a lack of preference for childbirth and adoption," he says. (More abortion stories.)
