A Palestinian motorist with a history of anti-Israel violence slammed his car into a crowded train station in Jerusalem yesterday, killing a 3-month-old baby girl and wounding eight people in what police are calling a terror attack. The girl and her parents, who were injured in the attack, were US citizens, according to Jerusalem's mayor. The car struck the train station near the national headquarters of Israel's police force. A police rep says the driver, who "has served time in Israeli prison for terrorism," got out of the car and tried to flee before he was shot by a police officer. Israeli media reports he is a member of the Islamic militant group Hamas and is in serious condition.
Footage captured by security cameras indicates the driver deliberately struck people waiting at the stop, the rep says. Video appears to show the driver accelerating while plowing through several rows of people. A doctor says the infant was injured and later died of her wounds. "She is a pure baby girl who hasn't done anything bad to anyone," her grandfather says. "She was murdered for no reason." It was not immediately clear if the baby and her parents also held Israeli citizenship. The Israeli government informed the US that Hamas is believed to be responsible for the attack, though there was no immediate information of any orders to carry out the attack delivered by high-level members of Hamas, a US official says.
