The town of Bell Gardens in Los Angeles County has been stunned by the murder of its mayor, who police say was shot dead by his wife during a domestic dispute that also involved their 19-year-old son. Daniel Crespo, 45, was shot several times by his wife, Levette, after the son intervened in an argument between the couple yesterday afternoon and she went to get a gun, police tell the Los Angeles Times. He died in the hospital from gunshot wounds to the torso. The son was treated in the hospital for facial injuries from the struggle with his father and was questioned by police. Police say detectives interviewed Crespo's wife last night and "determined that no arrests will be made at this time," though the facts of the case will be presented to the district attorney's office, NBC reports.
Crespo, who continued to work as a probation officer after being elected mayor of the town of 43,000 last year, is described as a dedicated public servant by lawmakers and associates. "Especially [with] me as a teenager, he always wanted to make sure everything was going fine," an 18-year-old neighbor tells KPCC. "He would do a lot of activities for us in the apartments, as a whole family. He was always giving us tickets to go to games, stuff like that."
