An end-of-summer trip to an Oregon beach turned tragic for a 9-year-old girl. As CNN reports, Isabel Grace Franks was digging a hole Friday evening with her siblings at Lincoln City's beach when the sand collapsed. "We heard screaming," says one tourist. "At first we thought, you know, it was just kids. But it was like screaming and screaming and screaming." Police say that Isabel was buried beneath the sand for about five minutes, as sand kept collapsing even as would-be rescuers tried to dig her out. By the time she was pulled from the hole, she was unresponsive and not breathing. Despite CPR efforts, Isabel was pronounced dead at a hospital a short while later, reports the Oregonian. "It's difficult for people to understand how hard it is to get people out," says a Lincoln City police rep. (More Oregon stories.)
