Now he's in stable condition at a New Hampshire hospital, where he underwent surgery. Freeh, 64, was FBI chief from 1993 to 2001 and recently ran the consulting firm Freeh Group International. He returned to the headlines two years ago by leading a child abuse investigation into former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky of Penn State University. (More Louis Freeh stories.)
