Google's Self-Driving Cars Will Be Able to Speed

When Google's self-driving cars hit the road, they'll be programmed to bust the speed limit in the name of safety. That nugget got spotted by PC Pro in a first-person account of a test drive by Paul Ingrassia of Reuters. Google engineers explain that it would be unsafe to make the cars obey the speed limit if all the vehicles around it were zipping by. Therefore, they've programmed the cars to go up to 10mph faster when deemed necessary. Meanwhile, fleets of self-driving trucks might be tested on roads in the UK next year, reports the BBC.
