Germans poured into Berlin's "Fan Mile" last night, watching the World Cup final in pouring rain near the Brandenburg Gate. Tension reigned until minute 113, when the German team scored the winning goal over Argentina. When the final whistle was blown, fireworks appeared in the sky as, for the first time, a united Germany won the tournament, the BBC reports. But in Argentina, the picture was decidedly different.
The mood wasn't initially sour in Buenos Aires. "We have nothing to regret; we played first rate," said one fan. Thousands were saluting their team's effort at the city's Obelisk when things got violent. After police began pursuing vandals, people started throwing rocks, ripping down streetlights, and smashing storefronts, the AP reports. Riot police turned to tear gas and rubber bullets in their effort to quell the unrest. Some 20 cops were hurt and 60 people arrested, according to police. (More Germany stories.)
